Lots of eucalyptus forests - can look deceptively like mainland Portugal

Azores: Eucalyptus → Madeira/mainland.

Flora: African lilies (long grassy leaves, round white/blue flower clusters on tall stems) very common; hydrangeas occasionally; ferns everywhere

Azores: Hydrangea walls everywhere → Azores; lilies + steep terrain → Madeira.

Terrace farming extensively (no flat land) - stone walls separate the plateaus

Within the Portuguese world the dense stone-wall terraces scream Madeira.

Houses white/grey/pastel (yellow, pink) w/ red tile roofs in good condition

White concrete-block barriers along roads

Bus-stop signs in a unique black/white/yellow scheme; taxis yellow w/ blue side stripe

Small unique stone bollards w/ red reflector - cuboidal or cylindrical

Sometimes yellow-and-black guardrails on mountain roads; bridge railings often painted dark green; signposts often striped (also Azores)

These highway speed-limit signs are unique to Madeira

Low clouds/fog typical; tunnels very common in the mountains

Free-roaming cows on high roads + cow warning signs - Madeira's are brown w/ white spots

Azores: Brown-white → Madeira; black-white → Azores.

Weird low-quality 'shitcam' coverage (official Ari): wide circular blur, gloomy image, often an unblurred white car back (good maps exclude it, but be aware)

This camera + white car back is a Madeira signature when it does appear.

Banana plantations → south; centre-west = elevated plateau (flat, misty, wind turbines); road east of the plateau = distinctive rocks + black-yellow guardrail; eastern tip = arid, nearly no vegetation
