Most common plate: white w/ an arcing rainbow across the centre - outline sometimes visible through the blur; front plates required

Only US state w/ its own language: Hawaiian place names everywhere - only 8 consonants (H K L M N P W + ʻokina), every word ends in a vowel, macrons Ā Ē Ī Ō Ū, many diphthongs (UI/AI/AE…)

Camera mix: lots of Gen4 smallcam (low mount, big round blur, car parts visible); Gen3 mostly w/ a stubby antenna; fair amount of Gen2 on rural roads (rare elsewhere in the US)

Lush tropical vegetation (ferns, tall grass, flowers) on volcanic topography: sloping volcanoes, rugged cliffs, valleys, craters - the combo is the Hawaii tell

Within the US nothing else pairs tropical plants with volcano slopes.

Homes: 1-2 storey wood, light colours, often w/ volcanic-rock retaining walls

Thick yellow bands on poles

Don't confuse with California's 3 thin yellow stripes.

Highway shields shaped like a guitar pick w/ the number at the bottom; mostly on yellow signposts

Raised pavement markers in a repeating pattern: 1 reflector - 4 close together - 1

State-highway first digit = island: 1-2 Hawaiʻi (Big Island), 3 Maui, 4 Molokaʻi/Lānaʻi, 5 Kauaʻi, 6-9 Oʻahu; all four 'interstates' are on Oʻahu

Car = island group: smallcam w/ black car → Hawaiʻi/Maui/Oʻahu; white car → Kauaʻi/Molokaʻi/Lānaʻi; Gen2 & non-smallcam Gen4 only on Hawaiʻi/Maui/Oʻahu; a distinct green blur → only Oʻahu

Islands:

Spotlights: the 'Hawaiian lattice' road grid on Mauna Loa's slope (volcanic soil/rocks, road angles are the clue); Kaunakakai = Molokaʻi's only 'urban' town; Red Hill (Maui) = barren red rock ABOVE the clouds; Kahoʻolawe = trekker-only islet SW of Maui (gravel trails, dry shrubs, dark red soil)
